What to check before choosing ERP software for a small factory
Buying ERP software is a bigger decision than the price suggests, because your team will live in it every day. These questions help you see past the demo.
Does it match how you make things?
Ask to see your own process, from raw material to finished goods. Bring a real product with a real recipe.
Can it show material shortages early?
A good system tells you what is missing before an order reaches the shop floor, not after it stops.
How does it handle batches and scrap?
If you track batches or expiry, check this properly. Ask how scrap and rework show up in your product cost.
Do stock and accounts stay connected?
When goods are received or sold, the accounts should update without anyone typing it again. Ask to see the entry appear.
Is GST handled the way you need?
Check invoices, HSN codes and reports. Ask directly what is not included, such as e-invoicing or return filing, and have your accountant review it.
How do you get your data in?
Ask how items, customers, suppliers and opening stock are imported. Try it with a small sample of your real data.
Who can see and change what?
Your storekeeper and your accountant need different access. Check that actions are recorded, so you can see who changed what.
Will your team actually use it?
Let the people who will use it try it. Check that it works on a phone on the shop floor.
What happens after you buy?
Ask who helps you go live, how support works, and what extra work costs.
Can you start small?
You should be able to begin with what hurts most and add more later, without starting again.
One last check
Ask to speak with someone running a similar business. No demo tells you as much as a real user will.
